Examinations

For more than 35 years, the International Academy of Cytology has provided examinations for cytotechnologists and cytopathologists around the world.
As of December 2008, more than 10,000 cytotechnologists have successfully passed the Comprehensive Cytotechnology Examination. More than 65 countries are represented among those who have passed the cytotechnology examination. More than 500 cytopathologists have passed the Board Examination in Cytopathology administered by the International Academy of Cytology.
The examinations for both the cytotechnologist and the cytopathologist will be held during the 17th International Congress to be held on Sunday, May 16th, 2010 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
PREREQUISITES
Cytopathology Board applicants must be IAC medical members for at least two years.
Cytotechnology applicants must have three (3) years of full-time experience in cytotechnology immediately prior to taking the examination. Applicants must be employed at the time of application. Prior to applying to sit for the CT (IAC) examination cytotechnologists working and living in a country in which a national registry for cytotechnologists exists (such as Australia, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa,and the USA) must have passed the national examination in the country in which he/she is working.
LANGUAGE
The Cytopathology Examination may be taken in English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.
The Cytotechnology Examination may be taken in Chinese, Dutch (The Netherlands), English, Finnish, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. If other languages are requested the Office of the Registrar must have at least one year notice.
TIMING FOR THE CYTOPATHOLOGY EXAMINATION
90 minutes - Microscopic (3 minutes for each slide)
80 minutes - Visual Image - (1 minute per image)
80 minutes - Written - (up to 80 minutes)
Five hours is the total number of hours it may take to sit for the examination.
There is usually a break of 20-30 minutes between the microscopic and the visual image examination.
Depending on the situation there could be a longer break between the microscopic and the visual image examination.
TIMING FOR THE CYTOTECHNOLOGY EXAMINATION
